Reiki Level 1 - Step-by-Step Attunement Procedure

print email
Modalities: Reiki

Purpose of Attunement The main purpose of an attunement or reiju (pronounced Ray-joo) is to raise the student’s energy level to re-connect to the true inner self (soul), plus strengthen the connection to universal spiritual energy.

In Reiki Level 1, the student is attuned through four initiations, to three symbols – the power symbol , Cho-Ku-Rei, the mental/emotional symbol , Sei-He-Ki and the distant/absentee symbol , Hon-Sha-Ze-Sho-Nen.

1st initiation

Energy is utilized through student’s physical body to raise energy vibrational level and to increase healing capacity.  Attunement opens crown chakra to access and channel more universal energy light, plus initiate universal wisdom and purpose to flow

2nd initiation

Energy operates through student’s etheric body (spiritual double located slightly above the physical body).  Attunement opens cervical and spinal column to improve the functioning of entire nervous system, plus open throat chakra to enhance communication

3rd initiation

Balances student’s right and left brain for clearer thinking and action

4th initiation

Influences student’s pineal and pituitary glands, which increase higher consciousness and intuition.  The pineal gland located at the 7th chakra (crown) increases perception of light, plus connects student to the universal source of energy.  The pituitary gland located at the 6th chakra (third eye) is also influenced to balance the endocrine system (see diagram page 19), as well as the brain.  The symbols are permanently sealed into the student’s hands and aura, before the energies between student and Master, are disconnected.  This initiation completes the process allowing the energy channels to remain open.

Preparing Students for Attunement Process (to relax student)

  • Play soft Reiki music
  • Sit with feet flat on the floor, place hands on laps (avoid crossing limbs – this indicates non-acceptance for receiving)
  • Close your eyes, take 3-deep breaths and relax
  • Take a moment to scan yourself
  • Starting at your feet and working upward toward your crown, observe any tenseness and relax each muscle
  • Say to students, “You are safe and secure at all times”
  • Begin guided meditation to relax them (see page 32)

Procedure during Attunement

  • Ring bell/gong 3x’s for student to enter attunement room
  • When student enters the attunement room they will
    • Bow to Reiki Master (to show respect)
    • Bow to picture of Usui sensei (to show respect)
    • Sit on stool with back straight, but comfortable
    • Feet flat on floor (avoid crossing legs – this indicates non-acceptance for receiving)
    • Hands held loosely on lap (avoid crossing hands – this indicates non-acceptance for receiving)
    • Close eyes and relax

(Reiki Level 1 Attunement continued on next page)

Guided Meditation Script to BEFORE Attunement to Relax Student

  • In front of you is a wide, staircase made of clear quartz crystal
  • Walk over to the staircase until you are standing in front of it
  • As I count from 1 to 10, I want you to climb the stairs until you reach the landing at the top
  • 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 and 7 and 8 and 9 and 10
  • You are now standing on the landing and in front of you is a white door
  • Slowly walk over to the door & open it, then step over the threshold
  • Remember, you are safe and secure at all times
  • Before you is a beautiful, serene park, full of lush green trees and fragrant, colourful blooming flowers in all shape and sizes
  • Their heady aroma permeates the air around you
  • In front of you is a slide situated in front of a large pool filled with rainbow coloured water
  • Walk over to the slide and as I count from 1 to 7, climb the stairs – 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 5 and 6 and 7
  • Now sit down on the slide, don’t worry about being fully dressed, just slide down into the water below
  • Relax in the water, feel its invigorating, refreshing, crisp, coolness as it laps against your skin
  • As you float and relax, be aware of what healing colour your body naturally absorbs
  • Above you is the yellow glow of the afternoon sun, beating its warmth over you
  • You feel so relaxed, so peaceful and very happy
  • Stay in the water and enjoy yourself
  • When you hear the bell ring three times, you will be ready to receive your attunement
  • If it’s your turn, slowly open your eyes, get up out of your chair and meet me at the door of the healing room

Guided Meditation AFTER Attunement (Excerpt from page 30)

  • You have now received attunement to Reiki level 1 and you will experience this in your own unique way
  • You are feeling very relaxed and very peaceful
  • Feel and know that the energy and power from the Reiki symbols are penetrating the very essence of your soul
  • Feel and know that you are a very loving and powerful channel for the Reiki healing energy
  • Feel and know that you are a powerful healing facilitator who will only perform Reiki for the highest good for self and others
  • Know that your spirit healing team will assist you whenever you call upon their help and guidance
  • Now I am going to count from 1 to 5 and when I reach number 5, you will return to the present time, take 3-deep breaths, open your eyes and you will feel very refreshed, plus invigorated
  • 1…start to come back.....2…..you are slowing returning to conscious awareness…..3….4….. you are almost back……5….you are fully back in the present time…….take 3-deep breaths…..open your eyes……rub your fingers together……you are fully conscious and aware of the present
  • If you feel unsteady or dizzy, take 3-deep breaths, drink some water or touch an inanimate object to help ground yourself.

Attunement to Reiki Level 1 is processed through four initiations.

First Initiation (Energy operates through student’s physical body to raise energy vibrational level and to increase healing capacity.  Attunement opens crown chakra to access and channel more universal energy light, plus initiate universal wisdom and purpose to flow)

Position: Back of Student; Area – Shoulders and Crown
  • Stand behind student and place your right hand on student’s shoulder.  Connect your energy to the universal energy source by raising your left arm with hand facing upward (to receive universal energy) and visualize or draw the Master Symbol Dai-Ko-Myo (pronounced Die-Coe-Me-Oh)  above the student’s crown.
  • With your left arm still raised, place your right hand on top of student’s crown and silently say a prayer or invocation

(E.g. “I ask for universal blessings from spirit and the Reiki healing team to assist this student to become a compassionate, loving Reiki healer who will be filled with humility in order to serve humanity for the highest good”)

  • Cup your hands, like a funnel, over student’s crown, but leave a small opening for a blowing hole
  • Position your tongue, take 3-deep belly/kidney breaths and contract your Hui-Yin.  Visualize white light entering your crown, going through your tongue, down the front of your body to the Hui Yin point, then back up your spine to the centre of your head (Fire Dragon energy)
  • Blow “Fire Dragon” energy into student’s crown
  • As you are blowing, visualize and silently intone each symbol 3x’s

Cho-Ku-Rei 3x’s (Choh-Koo-Ray)

Hon-Sha-Ze-Sho-Nen 3x’s (Hon-Shaw-Zay-Show-Nen)

Sei-He-Ki 3x’s (Say-Hay-Key)

  • See the symbol penetrate into student’s heart, then along their arms to their hands; wait until you feel the process is completed before continuing – use your intuition.  Note: Release your Hui Yin after the blowing is completed

Second Initiation (Energy operates through student’s etheric body (which is spiritual double located slightly above the physical body).  Attunement opens cervical and spinal column to improve the functioning of entire nervous system, plus open the throat chakra to enhance communication)

Position: Back of Student; Area – Both Shoulders
  • Continue standing behind student and place one hand on each shoulder, position your tongue, take 3-deep belly/kidney breaths and contract your Hui-Yin
  • Visualize  and silently intone Cho-Ku-Rei (Choh-Koo-Ray) 3x’s, as you blow “Fire Dragon” energy into each shoulder.  See the symbol move along student’s cervical and spinal column; wait until you feel the process is completed before continuing – use your intuition.  Note: Release your Hui Yin after the blowing is completed

Third Initiation (Balances student’s right and left brain for clearer thinking and action)

Position: Back of Student; Area – Occipital Ridge at Back of Head
  • Continue standing behind student and place your thumbs on and parallel to their occipital ridge (where the back of the head meets the neck), then position your tongue, take 3-deep belly/kidney breaths and contract your Hui-Yin while blowing.
  • As you blow, visualize  and silently intone Cho-Ku-Rei (Choh-Koo-Ray) 3x’s.  See the symbol penetrate the back of the head; wait until you feel the process is completed before continuing – use your intuition.  Note: Release your Hui Yin after the blowing is completed

Fourth Initiation (Influences student’s pineal and pituitary glands, increasing higher consciousness and intuition.  This initiation completes the process allowing the energy channels to remain open)

Position: Right Side of Student; Area – Forehead and Back of Head
  • Move to student’s right side and place your left hand on the lowest part of the back of their head as you place your right hand across their forehead, position your tongue, then take 3-deep belly/kidney breaths and contract your Hui-Yin while blowing.
  • Visualize  and silently Intone Cho-Ku-Rei (Choh-Koo-Ray) 3x’s, as you blow the “Fire Dragon” energy into both areas (back of head and then forehead).  See the symbol penetrate these areas; wait until you feel the process is completed before continuing – use your intuition.  Note: Release your Hui Yin after the blowing is completed

Final Step of 4th Initiation(Three major symbols are permanently sealed into student’s hands where the energy is accessed automatically from the student’s subconscious level)

Position: Kneel in Front of Student; Area – Both Hands Palms Up
  • Walk counter-clockwise to student’s front.  Kneel in front of student and place both their hands in open hand position (palms open and facing upward) on their lap.  Apply symbols to each hand separately.  Starting with the left hand, cup your hands (like a funnel) over the palm, but leave a small opening in the centre to blow the symbols into
  • Position your tongue, take 3-deep belly/kidney breaths and contract your Hui-Yin while blowing the “Fire Dragon” energy into the 1st hand
  • As you blow, visualize  and silently intone Cho-Ku-Rei (Choh-Koo-Ray) 3x’s.  Then visualize  and silently intone Hon-Sha-Ze-Sho-Nen (Hon-Shaw-Zay-Show-Nen) 3x’s.  Lastly, visualize  and silently intone Sei-He-Ki (Say-Hay-Key) 3x’s
  • See the three symbols penetrate into the hand.  Note: Release your Hui Yin after the blowing is completed
  • Keep the left palm open and facing upward as you repeat the same procedure to the right hand
  • Once the procedure is completed on both hands, with the palms still open, simultaneously with both your hands, gently tap both palms 3-times to seal the symbols in
  • Gently close their hands into loosely-closed fists
  • Criss-cross their hands across their heart and then criss-cross your hands over theirs
  • Hold this position until you feel that the initiation is completed -use your intuition
  • When finished, walk counter-clockwise to back of student, bow to Usui sensei and give a silent prayer of gratitude

(E.g. “I give thanks of gratitude to the Reiki healing team for all assistance received during this attunement – thank-you, thank-you, thank-you”)

  • While at the back of the student, draw the Raku  symbol to ground and seal the symbols into the student’s aura plus disconnect your energy from that of the student’s
  • Ring bell 1-time (or advise student that attunement is completed)
  • Student bows first to Usui sensei, then to Reiki Master Teacher (to show respect), before leaving the room to return to their chair to continue meditating
  • When all attunements are completed, change from your attunement garment, do your cleansing exercise (E.g. dry brush or shower method) and wash hands (for sanitary purposes, plus to cleanse external energies)
  • Return to teaching room and use a guided meditation (E.g. page 32) to bring students back to the present time

Hi Arpita:

It’s wonderful that you have achieved becoming a Reiki Master – good for you! However, being a Reiki Master and having good energy does not have anything to do with going or not going to religious temples.

Being a Reiki Master is about having the ability to channel and use spiritual or universal energy (which is Reiki energy) to assist or to teach others to help them heal at all levels – emotional, mental, physical and spiritual levels so that they can maintain balance in every area of their life. It is also being committed to living and setting a positive example for others to follow.

Your aversion for going to the temple is based upon your own belief system and part of this may come from your upbringing or from what you have been taught by your parents, teachers or church or from what you presently think is expected of you. It also is based on your own personality and values, plus your natural beliefs which have nothing to do with what you were taught.

If you have no desire to go to temples, then don’t go. You should never feel obligated or pressured into going to the temple and you shouldn’t feel guilty about not going either. It is important to follow your own intuition, or what you feel drawn to do from deep within at your soul level and then do what is best for you despite any criticism or the opinion from others.

Hi Arpita:

It’s really great that you have self-love and this is the most important goal that everyone should strive to attain. But although you love yourself, you cannot make others love you as well or to accept you as you are. You do not have power over others; therefore, you cannot influence, control or manipulate them to act, behave, accept or change as you want them to. The only person you have control over is you and only you.

Therefore, in order to have a happier relationship with your in-laws, you will have to change your perception and attitude of your family situation and then make any changes for how you act or behave toward them. For instance, no matter how they treat you, continue to treat them with kindness and respect. If they don’t love you, give and show them your love anyhow. Try to be as co-operative and helpful as possible. However, this doesn’t mean that you should allow them to bully you or to treat you with disrespect or cruelty. It only means that you act or re-act to others or to situations on a higher level and maybe a little of your goodness will rub off. In other words, be their teacher and set an example for them.

Meanwhile, meditate and ask your spirit team (guides) for assistance, guidance and direction for overcoming this situation. You can also talk to your soul-self as if it were your best girlfriend – vent your feelings, talk about your troubles, talk about your daily experiences, talk about what you have learned, talk about your goals, etcetera and you can also ask questions, but again only ask for assistance, guidance and direction for answers to your questions.

I have a 10 year old son who lacks concentration and is falling behind in his grades.can reiki help him?i have seen some improvement in his health after a distant healing. How do I explain my husband that reiki can help my son?my husband is an atheist and thinks that I want to teach religion to him. I am convinced that reiki will help my son improve his concentration and would perform better academically as well as help to improve his behavior(he does not have any behavioral problems, but does not listen to anyone else other than his father)
Thanks for the help

Hi Veena:

Thank you for your inquiry regarding the benefits of Reiki for your son.

Certainly Reiki can help to re-balance your son on all four levels – emotional, mental, physical and spiritual. Other modalities such as yoga, meditation or martial arts would also help him to develop better concentration, focus, awareness and commitment.

Your husband can relax, because Reiki is NOT a religion and has nothing to do with religious beliefs or doctrines. The only way that your husband can understand or begin to believe that Reiki is not a religion is through education. Show him articles or books about Reiki so that he can expand his awareness. The other way is for him to have a Reiki session so that he can feel and experience its benefits first-hand.

Perhaps your husband is skeptical about Reiki, because its healing energy cannot be seen, nor proven according to his beliefs. However, electricity exists, yet he does not actually see it. The air he breathes keeps him alive, but yet he does not actually see what he’s breathing.

It’s important for your husband to understand and realize that any limited or negative beliefs, attitude and behaviour will have an adverse effect on your son. Children are like sponges and will copy their parent in order to please and win approval. Therefore a responsible parent should try to be an open-minded positive influence and educator for their children.

Reiki is simply an energy-based healing modality in which the Reiki practitioner channels Reiki energy (universal life force energy) through their body and into the client. A trained Reiki practitioner will use a combination of focus, intention, deep-breathing, various hand positions, and Reiki symbols during treatment. Reiki will encourage energy movement throughout the body, on all four levels, that will unblock, and re-balance the client’s chakras, release stuck or negative energy, plus relieve pain and discomfort, as well as re-energize, etc., which in turn promotes and encourages healing and balance.

Of course it helps if the client is open-minded to receive Reiki treatment. It is also helpful if the client is willing to change their attitude, thinking, beliefs, habits, personal care, nutrition, sleep pattern, etc. to a level that is more positive and beneficial to their overall well-being.

Hi,

Good Sunday you all!

I am actually looking for learning Reiki. However, I am a bit confused when I come across a teacher who ask me to come to have a full day workshop with manual, cd and lunch offered as well as certificate and ten i practise later at home. I was enrolled for the session.

But upon sharing the news with some close friends they told me that reiki is not done in one day, in fact I should meditate and keep fast for 21 days and only after 21 days that i get certified.

Kindly can you help which one to follow?

Many Thanks

Waiting for your response

Hi Varunee:

Thank you for your inquiry regarding taking a Reiki course.

Each qualified & certified Reiki Master Teacher will offer and follow his/her own specific teaching curriculum. In other words, the teaching material taught to the student will vary from teacher to teacher depending on the teacher’s education, training, knowledge and beliefs. Some teach the original three levels of Reiki, while others teach modified four levels or more.

In Canada, Reiki Master Teachers who belong to the Canadian Reiki Association (CRA) follow set guidelines outlined by the association. Although the teaching material will still vary from teacher to teacher, members abide by set guidelines required by the CRA. For example, Reiki Level 1 through 3 must be taught not less than 8 hours, whereas Reiki Master Teacher level must be taught not less than 12 hours.

Reiki Master Teachers who do not belong to the Canadian Reiki Association can set their own teaching hours. For example, for Reiki Level 1 a course may be taught anywhere from 4 hours to 2 days.

The information that your friends shared is neither right, nor wrong. In the olden days learning Reiki was done over a period of time; sometimes it took years to complete a level, but in modern times this is just not feasible, because both men and women work and have busy schedules. Of course it still depends on the Reiki teacher that you choose to learn from and how they teach their course. Currently, most Reiki teachers teach a 1-day course for Levels 1 to 3, but Reiki Master Teacher level takes 2-days. Some teachers offer an "intensive weekend" course where they teach Reiki Level 1 and 2 together, but in reality this is too much information to comprehend in such a short period of time.

A Reiki teacher who includes a meal with the course, usually adds this expense into their Reiki course fee. My preference is to offer a lower course fee; therefore the student is asked to bring their own bag lunch and beverage.

Most Reiki teachers provide the student with a Reiki certificate on the same day that the course is taken. Some teachers provide a Reiki manual, while others give printed or photocopied hand-outs.

Upon completion of each Reiki level, there is a 21-day cleansing period in which the student may be required to do daily re-balancing exercises. Again, this will depend on the teacher’s teaching curriculum.

It helps to implement a meditation practice into your daily lifestyle, but it’s not a requirement for doing Reiki. For example, Reiki Level 1 is called the “self-healing level” - it provides knowledge and hand techniques enabling the student to give Reiki to themselves, as well as to others or to animals – Reiki is applied regardless of whether the student meditates or not.

Anybody who takes a Reiki course should definitely practice Reiki on themselves daily in order to maintain balance mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually, and on others (or animals) as often as possible in order to develop their skill and build self-confidence.
