Reiki Treatment for Asthma

People who suffer from asthma have stated how much easier it is to breath and how much more relaxed they feel after a Reiki treatment session. Reiki can be a very powerful tool to relief stress and therefore reduce the severity and frequency of asthma attacks. There are many examples of people who have found that Reiki was effective in reducing or relieving their asthmatic symptoms as well as the frequency and severity of asthma attacks.

One of the underlying causes of asthma is known to be anxiety and or emotional stress.  Reiki can be a very powerful tool to relief that stress and therefore potentially reduce the severity and frequency of asthma attacks.  Reiki is based on the belief that illnesses are related to imbalances in the patient’s energy field and that by correcting those imbalances, health can be restored.

Reiki (pronounced "ray-kee") is a therapeutic technique in which healing energy is channelled, or conducted, through a practitioner's hands into the person receiving the treatment.  It is believed that Reiki brings the body into emotional and spiritual balance, supporting the body's natural ability to heal itself.

Because the effects of Reiki are individual, it is hard to design a scientific study to prove or disprove the validity of this type of treatment for asthma.  However, there are many anecdotal stories from people who have found that Reiki was effective in reducing or relieving their asthmatic symptoms as well as the frequency and severity of asthma attacks.  People who suffer from asthma have stated how much easier it is to breath and how much more relaxed they feel after a Reiki treatment session.

Reiki should not be used instead of traditional treatments for asthma but may be effective as a complementary treatment.

Frequently Asked Question about Reiki

What is a session usually like?

A session will usually begin with a brief conversation with the practitioner and client to establish what the client is hoping to get out of the session, as well as building a rapport between them.  The client will then lie on a massage table (fully clothed) and the practitioner will generally start at the head moving down to the knees or ankles.  There are general hand positions that are used to cover the seven main chakras and major organs.  Each position is held anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes during which time the practitioner simply allows energy to flow from the practitioner to the client.  There is no physical manipulation.  Sessions are an individualized experience and are considered to be relaxing, gentle and safe.

How long does a session usually last?

A session generally lasts around 45 minutes to an hour.  Some practitioners will spend a full 90 minutes, so be sure to ask before you go what to expect.

What are price ranges for a treatment (US / Canada)?

Prices can range from $25 to $100 dollars depending on geography.  There are some practitioners who offer sessions free of charge or by donation.

How to Select a Good Reiki Master

How are practitioners trained?

Training outside of Japan is usually divided into 3 levels or degrees.  The first degree teaches the basic theories and procedures.  Duration of the course depends on the Reiki Master Teacher; some teach four sessions over a period of days, others teach two sessions in two days.   Once the first degree is completed the practitioner can treat themselves and others.   In the second degree students are taught  the use of several symbols that are said to enhance the strength and distance over which Reiki can be exerted and can take as long as 20 years to learn.  The third degree or “master training” once completed allows the new Reiki Master to attune others to Reiki and to teach the three levels to others.

There is a lot of variation in training methods, speed of completion (i.e., attunement), and costs and as such no licensing programs at this time.

How would you select a practitioner?

One good way of finding a Reiki practitioner is word of mouth especially from local practitioners of complimentary therapies (acupuncture, shiatsu, massage, etc).  Local practitioners usually know one another by reputation and sometimes share offices or cross refer.

To select a practitioner it is best to ask questions like:  how long have you been working with Reiki? What training have you had?  Do you teach? How do you personally use Reiki?

Some people believe that when choosing Reiki instructor look for one with a shorter lineage – as close to the original source of the practice as possible.  Others say that the length of the lineage is not as important as the practitioner himself or herself.

You may also want to look for practitioners associated with professional bodies with high ethical standards, but the most important thing of all is your comfort level with person that you will be seeing for Reiki.

Theory behind Asthma Treatment using Reiki

One of the underlying causes of asthma is known to be anxiety and or emotional stress.  Reiki can be a very powerful tool to relief that stress and therefore potentially reduce the severity and frequency of asthma attacks.  Reiki is based on the belief that illnesses are related to imbalances in the patient’s energy field and that by correcting those imbalances, health can be restored.

One of the core concepts of Reiki is that all healing is self healing, and the Reiki practitioner holds and shares a healing vibration and holding the intent for healing for the person you are treating to help bring their own vibration into a healing place.  However, the Reiki master does not do the healing and cannot force healing on someone who is not ready (at whatever level; physical, emotional or spiritual) to accept it.

Research of Asthma Treatment using Reiki

There is no research related to Reiki for asthma (and indeed very little research related to Reiki at all).  This may be partly because the effects of Reiki on each person are very individual and depend on that individual's energy channels and any blockages.  Or it may be because Reiki practitioners are very clear that this type of energy healing is not a cause and effect mechanism but that the effects may be different for each person.

From the time I was an infant, I was diagnosed with Asthma. For the past 52 years I accepted that this was just part of who I was.

On March 4, 2012 I received my Reiki Master/Teacher Certification. During this process, my energy level changed. On a break during my training I looked into a mirror with both hands over my lungs and heart chakra and professed that I was ready and willing to conciously heal myself.

On March 7, 2012 I set my intention to personally heal my lungs and allow them to breathe freely and easily.

Twice a day, I performed Reiki treatments on myself, enhancing it with meditation and mantras. I monitored my condition in a journal to watch my progress.

This is my last journal entry dated April 15, 2012:

"I am regularly practicing meditation and Reiki and it has been a steady flow of smooth and easy breathing. Any time I feel the need for medication I talk myself out of it and ease the breathing on my own. My last dose of medication was March 24, 2012."

If you would like more information on my story and how you can use Reiki to heal yourself, please contact me at

Quoting babita:
where should I give reiki for asthma

Hi,

I take it you are looking for which part of the body you need to focus on. For me I concentrated mostly on the Heart Chakra as this is closest to the lungs.

I also move the energy through all of the Chakras as a general 'Reiki Cleanse'

If this treatment is for a client please be clear that this is not a replacement for medication but as a compliment to any medical treatment.

Take Care,

Loretta
