How to Select a Good Homeopath

Homeopathic Certification and Credentials

Practitioners of homeopathy can range from medically licensed to non-licensed.  It is therefore important when looking for a homeopathic practitioner to understand some of the credentials and certifications.

The primary certifying body for homeopathy is the Council for Homeopathic Certification (www.homeopathicdirectory.com).  Practitioners certified by them use the designation CHC.

Then there are additional designations (DHt, DHANP, RSHom (NA) to name the top few) that use the CHC as the initial stage of certification and then have additional requirements in order to attain their standards.

RSHom (NA)  is registration with the North American Society of Homeopaths (http://www.homeopathy.org) and is for the professional homeopaths who are not also licensed in other fields. DHANP is a Diplomate of the Homeopathic Academy of Naturopathy (http://www.hanp.net) and is reserved for licensed naturopaths who specialize in homeopathy. DHt is a Diplomate in Homeotherapeutics from the American Board of Homeotherapeutics (http://homeopathyusa.org/specialty-board.html) and is reserved for MD & DO licensed physicians who specialize in homeopathy.

Theory behind Anxiety Treatment using Homeopathy

Homeopathic medicine uses natural plant, animal and mineral based substances that would, in a healthy person, illicit similar symptoms to the ones you are experiencing. The small amount of medicine helps stimulate the body's own healing ability in treating the anxiety.

There are homeopathic medicines for a variety anxieties and their causes:

Aconitum napellus: A panic attack that comes on suddenly with very strong fear (even fear of death).

Argentum nitricum: Anxiety develops before a big event.

Arsenicum album: People who are deeply anxious about their health, and extremely concerned with order and security.

Calcarea carbonica: Dependable, solid people who become overwhelmedfrom physical illness or too much work and start to fear a breakdown.

Gelsemium: Feelings of weakness, trembling, and mental dullness (being “paralyzed by fear”).

Ignatia amara: A sensitive person who is anxious because of grief, loss, disappointment, criticism, loneliness (or any stressful emotional experience).

Kali phosphoricum: When a person has been exhausted by overwork or illness and feels a deep anxiety and inability to cope.

Lycopodium: Anxiety from mental stress and suffer from a lack of confidence.

Natrum muriaticum: Deep emotions and a self-protective shyness can make these people seem reserved, aloof, and private.

Phosphorus: Openhearted, imaginative, excitable, easily startled, and full of intense and vivid fears.

Pulsatilla: Anxiety as insecurity and clinginess, with a need for constant support and comforting.

Silicea (also called Silica): Capable and serious, yet are also nervous, shy, and subject to bouts of temporary loss of confidence.

Research of Anxiety Treatment using Homeopathy

Homeopathy for anxiety and anxiety disorders: a systematic review of the research.

Summary:  A comprehensive search demonstrates that the evidence on the benefit of homeopathy in anxiety and anxiety disorders is limited. A number of studies of homeopathy in such conditions were located but the randomised controlled trials report contradictory results, are underpowered or provide insufficient details of methodology.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of classical homeopathy in generalized anxiety disorder.

Summary:  The effect of homeopathic treatment on mental symptoms of patients with generalized anxiety disorder did not differ from that of placebo. The improvement in both conditions was substantial. Improvement of such magnitude may account for the current belief in the efficacy of homeopathy and the current increase in the use of this practice.
