Many people realize their posture needs improvement, but most don’t know the extent of pain and discomfort that can arise by being out of alignment. It also goes beyond physical pain and reaches into our psychological well being causing lack of energy and overall feeling of not feeling well.

Our sense of well-being and ability to function is uniquely tied to how well or poorly we manage and maintain our upright form in gravity. When we are out of alignment, gravity drags us down, just as it drags down a building that has lost its architectural integrity. Whether from poor posture, injury, illness or emotional distress, a misaligned body is at war with gravity. We experience this war as pain, stress or depleted energy. When the body loses its alignment, characteristic patterns of strain and tightness appear having a great effect on us.

Although many of us attempt to correct our posture feeling that something needs to change, it can be an overwhelming task requiring exhausting amounts of energy on our part as we try to sit or stand up straight. Most people just give up after awhile.

Rolfing® Structural Integration is a manipulative therapy and movement education program that releases these strain patterns allowing us, not only to stand and sit straight without effort, but also to move in a more fluid and graceful manner.
Rolfing is about enhancing the functioning of the whole body by making it right with itself and the gravitational pull. When strain patterns are released in the right order, the body rights itself in gravity and is allowed to heal itself.

If you can imagine how it feels to live in a fluid, light, balanced body, free of pain, stiffness, and chronic stress, at ease with itself and the gravitational field, then you will understand the purpose of the Rolfing process.

Why do you practice Rolfing / Structural Integration?

I practice Rolfing because I love to see real, holistic and lasting changes, not only in a person's physical structure but also in their psycological well being.

How long is a typical Rolfing / Structural Integration session?

A typical Rolfing session is approximately 90 minutes long.

How often do clients come for a Rolfing / Structural Integration session?

That depends.  Rolfing SI is a 10-session series aimed at realigning and balancing the body as a whole.  Each session addresses a different part of the body in optimal order building on the previous sesson. At the end of this process, the work is completed, the body is realigned.

During the 10-series, some people come once a week, some every two weeks and some once a month or every six weeks.  The changes we make will last.

NOTE: Even though Rolfing Structural Integration is a series, you are welcome to try the first session of Rolfing to experience the changes that can be made.

How should someone prepare for a Rolfing / Structural Integration session?

They should want to feel better.

If you can imagine how it feels to live in a fluid, light, balanced body, free of pain, stiffness, and chronic stress, at ease with itself and the gravitational field, then you will understand the purpose of the Rolfing process.

Is Rolfing / Structural Integration covered by any insurance or extended medical coverage in your area? If so, which?

I do not accept insurance, but I will gladly give you a reciept to turn in to your insurance company.

What questions do new clients frequently ask you about Rolfing / Structural Integration?

Most frequently asked questions are covered on my website in the FAQ page.

Describe a typical Rolfing / Structural Integration session:

In a typical Rolfing Structural Integration session the client will stand, move and walk so that we can discuss what is going on in their body and make a plan of what to do during that session.  Then the client usually lies on the Rolfing table and the work begins.

As we work releasing different fascial shortenings, the client will be asked for small movements in different parts of the body.  This helps facilitate changes and also increases their awareness of their bodies.

They may be asked during the session to stand, walk or sit on the side of the table to make sure we are on track in our process.

What would you tell anyone wondering if Rolfing / Structural Integration will help them?

Rolfing Structural Integration will help EVERYONE

Gravity is the only true constant in our lives.  Days change, seasons change, but gravity stays the same.  If we are out of alignment with gravity then we are fighting gravity.  Rolfing Structural Integration allows us to use gravity instead of fighting against it.

Rolfing Structural Integration goes beyond pain relief.  It offers a greater sense of well being and greater happiness from relief of "ailments" many times we don't even know we possess.

How good would it feel to just feel better?

What are the benefits/results people see from Rolfing / Structural Integration?

Pain relief and a sense of being more graceful, fluid, and alive.

How does Rolfing / Structural Integration work?

Rolfing® Structural Integration is a manipulative therapy and movement education program that releases strain patterns in our bodies allowing us, not only to stand and sit straight without effort, but also to move in a more fluid and graceful manner.

Where did you study Rolfing / Structural Integration

The Rolf Institute of Structural Integration

What is your philosophy of healing/treatment?

I believe that given the right opportunity our bodies can and will heal themselves.

I believe that modern drugs only "mask" the problem.

I believe the human being is a multi-layered organism and that the person as a "whole" has to be addressed for any real healing to take place.

How has Rolfing / Structural Integration impacted your life?

I thought I had done all that I could do addressing my shoulder pain, hip pain and plantar fasciitis. I had gone to my personal physician, orthopedist, chiropractors, physcial therapy, massage therapists ALL with no relief.  I thought, as many do, that I was just getting older and being in pain was just part of life. Then I discovered Rolfing Structural Integration.

After each Rolfing session I would drive 2-2.5 hours home spending each moment amazed at the changes that I felt in my body. I also began to be happier and was able to let stressful situations just roll off with greater ease. I knew I had to be a part of this!

Amazing also was a year after my sessions as I sat on my front porch one morning I noticed that I felt better than I did immediately after the completion of the series.

Now, as a Certified Rolfer, I find great joy in seeing others experience these profound changes.  I love their expressions when they find their line in gravity and the relief it brings on many different levels.

What is the most important thing you have learned from practicing Rolfing / Structural Integration?

That life truly can be better for everyone.

When I first started seeing Clay, I was very apprehensive as I have been through many different modalities in an attempt to reverse prior injuries. I was in a very bad car accident two and a half years ago and I have been to physical therapy, chiropractors, sports massage therapists, doctors, and gyms. I had some success with these professionals but there was still something missing for my recovery.

Upon meeting Clay you'll notice that he is a very personable gentleman and he actually cares about and your problems. Clay is truly passionate about what he does and he brought that passion forward to help me immensely. He never treated me like an appointment. He always took time to listen and adjust based on my input. I learned many new things about myself and my body as well as stretches and exercises I can continue to do.

After completing the 10 series of Rolfing, a little over a week ago, I just went on my first three-mile hike in years and I am completely pain-free. Thank you so much for all you did for me and I hope others find you as well.

    Client: B.B. Maryville, TN

This week I began living in my body. Unlike others who seek out Rolfing, I have not sustained a sports injury or had an accident that I needed to heal from. I have needed healing of a different kind. As a young adolescent, I grew tall fast. I was very self-conscious about towering above all of my peers and about being gawky. Rapid growth resulted in my developing scoliosis and my embarrassment led to a pattern of poor posture. My stressful job sitting all day just adds to the achiness my body has stored for decades.

Several years ago, a journey with Stage II breast cancer brought me to the realization that I have spent too much time living in my head and heart, and needed to pay more attention to my body. Since I have always been interested in Rolfing, I was delighted to learn that Clay, a Certified Rolfer, is right here in the Knoxville area.

Every session with Clay is not only physically therapeutic, but it is also a lesson in anatomy and body mechanics. Clay's appreciation of the human body's design and his love of Rolfing are contagious! I leave every session feeling freer, lighter, less achy and—the only way I can describe it is "connected." I have regained about ¼" in height that I lost over the years. This week I completed session #7. Since the work done in each session is built upon everything accomplished in all of the previous sessions, by the end of #7, the body has pretty much been re-aligned the way it is designed to be.

As I stood up after the session and Clay was encouraging me to become acquainted with what he called my "line," the thoughts ran through my head: This is my line. This is how my body is supposed to feel. This is how it feels to be fully in my body. It's not gawky and there's no reason to feel self-conscious. This is MY unique body….and it's not only OK to be in this body, it's fantastic! I appreciate so much what Clay has helped me learn and look forward to the discoveries that lie ahead in the remaining sessions of the Ten Series.

    Thank you, Clay!

I feel like a new person.  I know that what i have gained will benefit me for the rest of my life.  The Rolfing series was definitely worth more to me and my life than what I paid.

    Client: L.S. Knoxville, TN

Hey, Clay! Holy cheese kabobs...I can breathe! Being able to take a full breath has been really, really amazing. I feel like I'm sitting and standing straighter - my mom noticed that my shoulders had dropped and a friend said I looked taller. After 1 session! I actually had to adjust my seat in my car this morning because it was uncomfortable for me to sit in the usual "slumped" position. I feel like I am able to move, and don't feel as restricted. I met friends for brunch
yesterday and put my elbows on the table and it felt like my shoulder blade popped out of place, but then I realized it was just able to move in a way it hadn't before. I'm a bit sore everywhere, but it's not painful. I actually woke up both yesterday and today with less of the usual amount of pain that I'm in.

That was a long winded way of saying I FEEL GREAT!!!!

Thank you so much, Clay. I feel so lucky to have found you and can't wait to see you on the 23rd!!!
