Trager is a very gentle modality of bodywork and movement re-education developed over the course of Dr. Milton Trager's lifetime. The Trager Approach uses movement to teach the body how to be more comfortable and to move with freedom and ease. During the table work, a combination of rocking, compression, elongation through the joints, shimmering and percussing are all basic Trager techniques that are employed. The Trager Approach acts to re-educate the muscles and soft tissue and enables the body to release accumulated tension, pain, and trauma. Trager work does not engage pain. Clients are encouraged to provide feedback during sessions so that a repertoire of comfortable sensations can be developed. This allows the nervous system to rest and receive new input.
Another component to the work is the teaching of Mentastics, self induced, pleasurable movements that are used to reinforce the sensations experienced while on the table. Mentastics is a word coined by Dr. Trager for 'mental gymnastics'. Mentastics movements can be used daily for improving physical functionality and releasing tension and stress that may accumulate during the day.
