Thought Field Therapy® (TFT)

Thought Field Therapy® ("TFT") was created by Roger Callahan, PhD (a clinical psychologist) and his wife, Judith Callahan in 1979 and is a meridian energy modality that uses many of the concepts from Acupuncture and Applied Kinesiology.

It is based on the belief that imbalances in a person's vital energy (or qi in Traditional Chinese Medicine) can cause adverse physical or emotional distress.  The theory is that when a person thinks about an experience or thought associated with an emotional problem, they are tuning in to a "thought field." Deformations in a thought field create physical and emotional problems, which are activated by thinking about those problems and that each perturbation corresponds to a meridian point on the body. In order to eliminate the emotional upset, Callahan says that a precise sequence of meridian points must be tapped. He posits that tapping unblocks or balances the flow of qi and then the emotional or physical disorder will be resolved.

What is a Session Like?

Depending on the symptoms, patients are taught and directed by the practitioner to perform a tapping sequence on themselves (these tapping sequences are called 'algorithms') that vary based on the particular problem being treated.  According to proponents, often only one session is needed to permanently eliminate emotional distress in relation to a particular problem. Issues that are more complex, may require further sessions. During the Thought Field Therapy® session, patients are asked to think about an upsetting situation and then rate the distress they feel at the thought. Depending on the emotions experienced, and the energy meridian(s) affected, the therapist will prescribe a certain tapping sequence. Performing the required algorithm while focusing on the problem at hand is believed to clear the emotional blockage, allowing energy to flow freely through the affected meridian(s), eliminating distress. Results are generally seen almost immediately, at which time the patient is "cured" of the problem in relation to that thought field.

Callahan states that when the thought field is “attuned,” that is, when the person is thinking about the distressing event or image, perturbations are able to be located and corrected. The tapping is theorized to add energy to the system, which then re-balances the overall energy flow, thereby eliminating the distress at the source.

There are three levels of training in Thought Field Therapy®

Algorithm Practitioner (TFTalg):

At this entry-level, trainees are taught the basic skills needed to treat trauma, addictive urges, anger, anxiety, phobias, panic attacks, obsession (OCD), depression, grief, rage, shame, guilt, etc., and the resolution of barriers to successful treatment. More often than not, Algorithm practitioners incorporate TFT as a "toolbox" item within their existing therapy provision, e.g. counselling, hypnotherapy, life coaching, etc.

Diagnostic Practitioner (TFTdx):

At this higher level, practitioners have been trained in the unique TFT Causal Diagnostic Procedures which allows them to offer individualised treatment for almost all psychological and some physical problems.

Only those who have undergone additional training under the direct supervision of Dr. Roger Callahan are approved to train others in the practice of TFT Algorithms.

Voice Technology™ (TFT-VT) or Advanced Practitioner (TFTadv):

At the highest level of TFT training, VT™ practitioners have undergone a unique one-to-one training program under the direct supervision of Dr. Roger Callahan himself. Advanced Practitioners have studied the TFT "Optimal Health" program which offers more generalised training to a similar level. Both use an advanced causal diagnostic procedure to provide individualised treatment for almost all psychological and some physical problems. As the procedures do not require face-to-face consultations, it is possible for treatment to be completed in the course of a telephone call from anywhere in the world.

TFT-VT practitioners are also approved to train others in the practice of TFT Causal Diagnosis.
