Couples Counseling/Coaching

Couples Counseling is the process of counseling the parties of a relationship in an effort to recognize and to better manage or reconcile troublesome differences and repeating patterns of distress.

Couples Coaching is similar in that the goal is to help the two parties in a relationship better manage their interactions to have a healthier relationship.

The difference between counseling and coaching (in broad terms) is that a counselor is usually an expert in a particular field (i.e. interpersonal dynamics/psychology) while a coach provides access to a set of skills and tools and encourages both parties along.

The coaching relationship is less formal and defined than the counselling relationship, and may involve more accountability, while the counselling relationship is more formalized and follows a structured approach that is a form of therapy.

The training requirements are different for each, and counseling will tend to be more needs-based (i.e. 'we have a problem we need assistance to fix') whereas coaching is focused more on enhancing the relationship using tools.  In coaching, sessions will tend to be more focused on taking action and moving forward, while in counselling, sessions will tend to focus more on examining the past and developing insight into what happened (still with the goal of modifying the present using those insights).  Counsellors will generally be less directive and focus more on examination and questioning (closer to a doctor-patient relationship), while coaches will generally focus more on action.
