The skillfully sequenced flow of vinyasa and the open awareness of zen meditation mutually support and build health, personal wellbeing, creativity and vitality. This retreat will explore the synergy and complementary insights and practices of Hatha Yoga and Zen Buddhism. Yoga classes will be a flowing vinyasa style that encourages movement of the body and the breath with fluidity, grace, strength, and stability. The yoga asanas help cultivate the flexibility of mind and body, postural strength, ease in sitting, and breath-work that are the basis of Zen practice. The Zen sessions will enable attention, inner quiet, fresh insights, and open awareness that support mind and body to flow as one through the yoga asana practice. Together, these techniques and practices are supportive for relieving stress, maintaining health, and promoting creativity and vitality. You’ll be gently guided through each practice. We recommend at least one year of Hatha Yoga practice. Some meditation experience is preferable, but not essential. (Read More)

About Tassajara Zen Mountain Center
Nestled deep in a mountain valley, Tassajara is located inland from the Big Sur coast in a remote part of the Ventana Wilderness. For centuries, the native Esselen people have visited here as a place of healing and renewal, and a hot springs resort was built in the 1800s. In 1967, Shunryu Suzuki Roshi and the San Francisco Zen Center established a monastic community at Tassajara, making it the oldest Zen training monastery outside Asia. The
baths and hot springs of Tassajara are hand-crafted Japanese-style with separate sides for men and women. Each side has a tiled indoor and outdoor plunge, steam room, and decks for sunning and yoga, with steps leading down into the creek. Tassajara is renowned for its
gourmet vegetarian cuisine, which has been featured in numerous cookbooks including,
The Tassajara Bread Book and
Tassajara : Dinners & Desserts. Over the years, a rich Zen-inspired culture of living mindfully with the earth and each other has developed at Tassajara. In the winter, Tassajara closes its gates and turns inward, as residents engage in intensive Zen training. During the summer months, our attention turns to welcoming and serving our guests and offering retreats. We warmly invite you to come and refresh yourselves in this very special place. San Francisco Zen Center, includes Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, as well as, Beginner's Mind Temple (City Center) in San Francisco and Green Gulch Farm in Marin County, California.
