Taiji Straight Sword Form

Once you have completed the Taijiquan Open Hand Form the next step is to learn the weapons forms. These help to develop your spacial awareness and move your mental focus beyond your physical body and into the weapon. In doing this you become "one" with the weapon and it becomes an extended part of your being. This may sound esoteric, however what I really mean is that you must be aware of where the blade of the weapon is at all times.

Taiji Straight Sword (Jian )

Taiji Straight_Sword_Tai_chi_postureThe straight sword is know as the "weapon of a thousand days ". This was the amount of time required to become proficient in the use of the straight sword. This particular weapon was regarded as a symbol of status within traditional Chinese society, therefore it was worn as a sign of class and position by scholars, gentry, royalty and high ranking government officials .

The straight sword blade is long and pointed and sharpened at the end. It was used to thrust, cut and sever the arteries, tendons and muscles of an opponent. Therefore the primary purpose of this weapon when used in combat was to disable an opponent and render them unable to continue.

The sword form taught at Xiong Jing Tai Chi Chuan is the "Yang Style 54 step". The purpose of this form is to help develop a deeper awareness of footwork and mental focus. The mind (Qi) must extend beyond the body into the point of the blade and the sword becomes a integrated part of your own being.
