My Home, My Sanctuary

print email
Several years ago I was traveling through Europe with my daughters. We were in a town in South Germany, walking along cobbled streets, when we came upon a church that had been active since the 1300’s . It was open so we walked in. There was a feeling in this place that I had not experienced in all of the tours we had taken through cathedrals and museums. This was a sanctuary! It felt so peaceful. I was filled with quiet reverence as I looked around in awe. I had seen much grander buildings, but all that beauty could not duplicate the simplicity of peace, the sense of community, welcome, safety and security that I received in this small, well used church.
A few years later, after being attuned to Reiki energy, I was inspired to duplicate that feeling of sanctuary within my home. It was a time of change and my house felt very chaotic. I used the tools at my disposal - energetic tools of intention, visualization, and Reiki - and created a ritual for the energetic cleansing of my house. By doing this, I began to feel better about my home and my home began to feel better to me. The first time a friend expressed that my home felt very peaceful, I knew that things had shifted on a grand scale. No one had ever said that before!
Now my home is my sanctuary and I am able to create a sense of safety and security when I travel. My intent is that wherever I choose to lay my head, that is also where I choose to experience sanctuary. The effectiveness of this was evidenced on a game reserve in South Africa. I was lying on my cot with only a thin canvas between me and the lions roaring in the night and I was feeling just as safe and secure as if I was at home with four strong walls around me.
Below are the simple steps taken to shift the energy in my home. This can be used as a guideline, or you can use tools that you are more comfortable with. Just remember the most important part is the desire and intention to make your home a Sanctuary. The right actions will follow.

In the steps below Peace is the virtue I am anchoring. In your sanctuary, anchor whatever virtues you wish.
1.      Clear Your Room - Clearing energetically begins as you clear physically. Look at the space you want to clear. Remove anything that would be in conflict with what you wish to create.   To create Peace within your space, remove any books, newspapers articles and pictures of war, or anything that represents conflict.
2.      Center and Ground Yourself - It is difficult to anchor Peace if you are feeling agitated. Choose a time when you can feel relaxed and be assured of no interruptions. Turn off the phone. You may wish to light candles and play peaceful music to create a more conducive atmosphere. Move into the center of the room you are clearing and center yourself. A simple way of doing this is to connect to the rhythm of your breath and turn your focus inward, while relaxing the body. Grounding means connecting with the earth. Feel your feet planted firmly on the floor. You can take it deeper by imagining yourself as a tree, with roots spreading deep within the soil, and branches reaching high into the sky, firmly anchored between heaven and earth.
3.      State Your Intentions - This means stating what you desire to be in your space. An example: I intend to create a sanctuary within this room that is filled with peaceful energies.
4.      Visualize a Column of White Light - Stand in the center of your room. Facing the eastern corner, visualize a column of white light from floor to ceiling. Hold your hands out, palms towards the column, say the word Peace three times, “patting” or intending the energy of Peace is placed within the column. Using a sweeping motion of your hands, draw white light from the column as you begin to turn in a clockwise direction towards the next corner. Imagine the white light spreading from the first column moving along the wall from floor to ceiling, joining with the column of white light in the next corner.   Place Peace within this column and repeat the procedure of “patting” and sweeping until all the corners have “Peace Columns” and all the walls are joined in white light.   At this point, turn your attention to the ceiling. Imagine the white light is moving into the center of the ceiling from all four columns, completely filling with white light. Place Peace within the ceiling. Then repeat this procedure with the floor.
5.      Experience - Standing in the center of the room, relax your hands and sense the difference. Peace surrounds you. The columns of white light anchor the energy of Peace and it flows through all the walls, ceiling, and floor. You have created a peaceful sanctuary with intention, simple words and actions.
6.      Repetition - Remember, just as your house was not built in a day, a shift in energy will take more than one day. You may be able to feel a difference immediately, but regular repetition and maintenance is the only way to ensure a more permanent change.

This same procedure can be repeated for every room of your house or you can do it for the entire house at one time. You can extend it out to include your property by using the corners of your property as the anchor points for the Columns of White Light. There are many ways of creating and maintaining Sanctuary. I hope that by sharing My Sanctuary, it inspires you to create yours. Peace be with you.
