The Sacral Chakra

print email

The second chakra or sacral chakra is the energy centre for pleasure, sexuality, money, abundance and the fluidity of emotion. It is also the energy centre that holds our capacity for believing we deserve good things and our well-being.

Located two inches below the navel and two inches into the pelvis, it is a sacred home to our sacrum. When this sacred chakra is balances and in alignment we get enough rest, relaxation, food, hydration, exercise, fun, and money. What defines enough depends on the individual. Enough money for one person may not be enough for someone else. A rich person might have plenty of money in the bank but never feel that it is enough, just as a sex addict may never feel that they get enough sex.

Pleasure is essential to our well-being. When we allow ourselves to absorb the energy of receiving pleasure, our body, mind and spirit gets to recharge and and stay healthy whole and happy. When we deplete our energy body by not allowing ourselves to receive the goodness in life, our second chakra and our entire energy body is set off balance.

As the second chakra resonates with the element water, it also is associated with the movement of emotions and change. The fluidity of water helps us move in and out of emotions naturally, let go, and change when change comes. Water helps us "go with the flow". Moreover, the molecular structure of water changes in response to words, intentions and emotions. Masuro Emoto's work is one of the several examples of how science shows the power of our thoughts over our body on a cellular level. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccCsSXuMlLY

A chakra imbalance can be deficient or excessive. In the second chakra, a deficiency shows up as difficulty experiencing pleasure. The body is rigid and stiff with restricted jerky movement. The energy body is not receiving energy into this centre and therefore the fluidity of the body is affected. The natural motions and changes of life are difficult as is the ability to have fun, enjoy the fluidity of social interactions, sex and feeling emotions. Boundaries are very rigid and the person may lean towards isolation and introversion rather than reaching out. As the feelings may feel numbed, it may also feel as if the person is stuck in life. There is resistance to change, an attitude of pessimism, apathy and resignation.

With an excessive second chakra on the other hand, the chakra seeks to gain this energy from external sources, yet doesn't feel satisfied no matter how much they receive. This person feels and expresses their emotions perhaps inappropriately in outbursts because they crave the emotional fulfillment that they did not receive as a child. Being in a state of crisis is an addiction. Thus, they may continue to unconsciously create situations in their lives that match the intensity of the emotional intensity they have become addicted to. Rather than tending to introversion, an excessive second chakra constantly craves interacting with other people for fun, sex, and emotionally addictive behavior including co-dependency. They may love to party, drink, and have sex indiscriminately because the energy wants to find instant gratification and lots of it. Therefore, sex addiction and or alcoholism may replace true intimacy finding it hard to be satisfied or fulfilled with stillness. Holding and respecting our own and other people's boundaries is also likely to be an issue.

The trauma of sexual abuse affects this chakra and can cause severe second chakra excess or deficiency or even both. Taking care of yourself with adequate rest, food, water, exercise is essential for the sacral chakra as is honouring your body and treating it as sacred with respect.

To affirm a healthy second chakra, repeat to yourself:

I love my life exactly as it is.
I receive pleasure and abundance with every breath I take.
I trust my feelings and give them enough time and space for
expression.
I deserve true goodness of creativity, joy, and abundance.
